A cornerstone of Singaporean heritage, Tong Ah Eating House has been a beloved institution since its establishment in 1939. Originally housed in the iconic red-and-white triangular building at the junction of Keong Saik Road, it has since relocated just a few doors down to 35 Keong Saik Rd., continuing its legacy of serving traditional Singaporean fare. The ambiance is that of a classic 'kopitiam' or coffee shop, characterized by a bustling and lively atmosphere. Inside, the decor is simple and functional, with traditional round tables that often encourage communal seating, fostering a sense of shared dining experience. This no-frills setting is a deliberate nod to its history, prioritizing the authentic culinary experience over ornate decorations. Tong Ah Eating House is renowned for its traditional breakfast offerings, particularly its kaya toast. The kaya, a coconut and egg jam, is made in-house and is noted for being less sweet with a distinct grainy texture. Patrons can choose between traditional thick toast, a super crispy thin version, steamed bread, or French toast, all served with a generous spread of their signature kaya. Complementing the toast are perfectly soft-boiled eggs and a robust, traditionally brewed Nanyang coffee. Beyond breakfast, the establishment also serves a comprehensive menu of 'zi char' (wok-fried dishes) for lunch and dinner, featuring local favorites such as coffee ribs and fragrant chicken, making it a versatile dining destination for any time of the day.
